In conjunction with the commencement of the new semester for the Master of Public Health and Master of Epidemiology programmes at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, the Editor-in-Chief of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health (APJPH) was invited to deliver a session entitled “Manuscript Writing for Journal Publication” on 1st October 2026.
The session was designed to enhance postgraduate students’ understanding of scientific writing, manuscript preparation, and the publication process in peer-reviewed journals. Particular emphasis was placed on developing a clear, coherent, and well-structured manuscript that effectively communicates research findings to the scientific and public health communities. The key components of a public health manuscript, including the Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion, were explained with relevant examples to illustrate effective writing approaches and common areas for improvement.
The Q&A session also provided an overview of the manuscript submission and publication process to APJPH, including journal scope and requirements, manuscript preparation, submission procedures, peer-review processes, expected review timelines, and Article Processing Charges (APCs). Students were also introduced to considerations related to open-access publication and the importance of complying with journal-specific author guidelines.
In addition, the session highlighted essential principles of research and publication ethics, including ethical approval requirements for primary and secondary data research, authorship and contributorship, conflicts of interest, plagiarism, and responsible reporting of research findings. Practical guidance was also provided on selecting an appropriate journal, responding to reviewers’ comments, and improving the overall clarity and quality of a manuscript prior to submission.
Overall, the session provided postgraduate students with practical knowledge and guidance to strengthen their academic writing skills and better prepare their research work for publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
