The inaugural Asia Pacific Society of Association Executives (APSAE) Summit 2026, held on 24–25 July 2026 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, marked the official launch of APSAE, a regional platform dedicated to strengthening association leadership, governance, and collaboration across the Asia-Pacific. The summit brought together association presidents, chief executives, secretaries-general, board members, industry partners, and thought leaders from diverse sectors, including healthcare, science, education, finance, tourism, and technology.
Inspiring Leadership for a Changing Landscape
The two-day programme explored the evolving role of associations in an era of rapid technological advancement, geopolitical change, and shifting member expectations. Key themes included the future of association leadership, artificial intelligence and digital transformation, governance and strategic growth, membership engagement and sustainability, regional collaboration, and strategic partnerships.
The summit opened with welcoming remarks by Mr Prasant Saha, President of APSAE, who underscored the importance of building a strong regional community of association professionals committed to collaboration, innovation, and leadership excellence. This was followed by an inspiring keynote by Kevin Cottam, The World Has Moved On… Has Your Association?, which challenged delegates to embrace adaptive leadership and organisational transformation in response to a rapidly changing environment.
Another notable session by Jack Sim, Founder of the World Toilet Organisation, demonstrated how visionary leadership, bold advocacy, and strategic partnerships can elevate an organisation into a global movement. Jenniefer Setiawan of the EU–ASEAN Business Council further highlighted the value of cross-sector and regional collaboration in strengthening associations and enhancing their impact.
A particular highlight was the masterclass by Olena Lima, who introduced the Membership Marketing Cycle, a practical framework for sustainable membership development. The session focused on understanding member value, strengthening engagement and retention, growing membership and revenue, and optimising systems and technology. The masterclass encouraged association leaders to adopt a more strategic, data-informed approach to membership growth rather than remaining focused solely on day-to-day operations.
Reflections for the Public Health Community
At the invitation of Mr Prasant Saha, President of APSAE, the Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH), Prof Dr Victor Hoe attended the summit as a participant. The invitation provided an excellent opportunity for APACPH to gain insights from leaders of professional and membership-based organisations beyond the public health sector.
Many of the discussions resonated strongly with the challenges currently faced by regional public health organisations. In particular, the emphasis on leadership, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, strategic membership development, and organisational sustainability highlighted the need for associations to continually adapt to remain relevant and deliver value to their members. These reflections are especially pertinent as APACPH navigates an increasingly competitive landscape characterised by the emergence of new regional public health associations, networks, and professional societies.
The summit reinforced the importance of strategic leadership, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration in ensuring that established organisations continue to thrive while advancing their missions. The lessons shared throughout the programme will be valuable as APACPH reflects on its future direction, strengthens its engagement with member institutions, and continues to serve as a leading academic public health network in the Asia-Pacific region.
