Celebrating Excellence: APACPH Honourees of the 2024 Riegelman TIPH Awards

We are pleased to announce that two academic public health institutions affiliated with the Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) have been selected as recipients of the prestigious Cohort 3 Riegelman “This is Public Health” (TIPH) Global Grant Awards for 2024. The awards were officially presented on 29 May 2024 in the presence of Dr Richard and Mrs Linda Riegelman, long-time champions of public health education.

Out of 11 awarded institutions representing nine countries and six regional public health associations, Taipei Medical University (TMU) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) were successfully selected from APACPH. We extend our warmest congratulations to Prof Yi-Hua Chen (TMU) and Dr Zulkhairul Naim bin Sidek Ahmad (UMS) for their outstanding leadership in public health promotion and innovation.

Taipei Medical University: From Public Health to Global Impact

TMU’s awarded project, From Public Health to Global Impact: The TMU Mission, is built around three central pillars—health training, health initiatives, and health services. It encompasses certification programs, digital learning modules, public health summits, and outreach initiatives serving vulnerable communities in Taiwan and Cambodia.

Led by Dr Yi-Hua Chen, this initiative empowers students through hands-on practicums and international volunteer service, developing cultural competence and leadership skills while addressing critical health issues. The project exemplifies TMU’s commitment to fostering a globally engaged public health workforce.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah: Inspiring Young Eco-Leaders Across Southeast Asia

UMS’s project, Igniting Climate Awareness and Innovation: This Is Public Health Solutions, targets primary school students in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and the Philippines. It aims to nurture 500 young changemakers through storytelling, interactive webinars, innovation challenges, and a culminating School-Community Climate Carnival.

Helmed by Dr Zulkhairul Naim bin Sidek Ahmad, the program not only bridges climate change and public health but also fosters regional collaboration. By mobilising universities and student clubs as partners, the initiative builds a platform for sustainable, youth-led environmental stewardship.
