Cambodia Initiative

An APACPH mission that included the Secretary General Walter Patrick, Medical School University of Hawaii; Dean Jimba Masamine, University of Tokyo; Prof Colin Binns, Head of Nutrition SPH Curtin University; Prof Paula Palmer; Associate Director IPH, University of SouthernCalifornia and Prof Koja, University of the Ryukyus visited Cambodia from December 3-10, 2007. They conducted a high-level consultative meeting on Public Health Training & Research Needs and Opportunities with the Ministry of Health, Kingdom of Cambodia and several key International Health AID agencies including UNICEF, WHO, AusAID, US AID and JICA. In addition, two research workshops were conducted by Profs Paula Palmer and Colin Binns on Research, Publication and Dissemination of Findings for the faculty of the new School of Public Health, National Institute of Public Health and the Medical School and other health professionals. A follow-up meeting with faculty adminstrators and agencies for collaborative linkages are planned. Field visits were also carried out to assess the feasibility of integrating training to research and problem solving activities.

APACPH would like to thank the several senior Kingdom of Cambodia Ministry officials who were gracious to host us and assist in our program activities: His Excellency, Prof Eng Huot, Secretary State for Health; HE Ph. Chou Yin Sim, Under Secretary of State for Health, Dr Ung Sam An, Director, National Institute of Public Health (NIPH), Dean Saphonn Vonthanak, SPH, NIPH; Dean Kasonn Baunat, Faculty Medicine, NIPH. Dr Suomi Sakai, DRPH Country Representative, UNICEF provided the keynote address on the Country Health Situation.
